アニエスベー ギャラリー ブティックは、4月20日(土)から5月12日(日)まで、ヨリヤス（ヤシン・アラウイ・イスマイリ）による展示『Casablanca Chess Cafe』を開催します。
かつてプロのブレイクダンサーとして活躍し、2015年から写真家としてのキャリアを歩み始めたヨリヤスは、独自の視点で国際的に高い評価を受け、近年ではニューヨークタイムズ紙が発表する注目すべきアーティストの一人として選ばれています。ダンサーおよび振付師としての背景に加え、数学とチェスへの深い関心が合わさり、複雑でありながらもバランスのとれた構成の作品を生み出しています。
本展では、7年以上にわたり継続しているプロジェクト「チェスの駒の痕跡」からの作品33点が展示されます。5歳から10代にかけてチェスに熱中していたものの、長らくその世界から離れていたヨリヤスは、カサブランカの中心地にあるカフェでチェスを楽しむ人々に出会い、かつての情熱を再び見出しました。さまざまな年齢、性別、社会的地位の人々が集まり、照明が消えた閉店後も、彼らは携帯の光を頼りにプレイを続けます。ヨリヤスは、このカフェの日常と、チェスが織りなす人々の絆を、黒と白、暗闇と光、コントラストと調和の関係を通じて捉えています。
ヨリヤスは「KYOTOGRAPHIE 京都国際写真祭 2024」のメインプログラムのアーティストのひとりとしても招聘されており、アニエスベーがその展示『カサブランカは映画じゃない』をサポートしています。是非、本展示とあわせてご覧ください。

ヨリヤスは、モロッコの写真家、振付師。プロのブレイクダンサーとして注目を集めた後、2015年より写真家としての活動を開始。ヨリヤスは国際的な評価を受け、近年ではニューヨークタイムズ紙が発表する注目すべきアーティストの一人として選ばれた。パフォーマンスから写真まで、彼の作品は、人が都市や公共空間の中でどのように暮らし、馴染んでいくのかということについて焦点を当てている。モロッコ、特に自身が住んでいるカサブランカやアフリカの日常生活を撮影し、その地での様々な社会的変化について提示している。ありのままの現実を捉えた作品の数々は、彼の直感の力や特に色へのこだわりによって特徴付けられている。ヨリヤスは、新たな視点を提案するために、自身の振付師としての経験を取り入れている。また、瞬間的に切り取られた光景は、空間や動きを素晴らしく捉えていることを示唆している。数学とチェスに関心があることもあり、彼の作品には、様々な構想を含みながらも、バランスが取れた複雑な構成を見てとることができる。アフリカ写真賞（CAP）（2018年）、アラブ世界研究所の若手現代創作賞（2019年）、マルケ・マラケシュのコンテンポラリー・ダンス・フェスティバルのタクリフ賞（2023年）など、数多くの賞を受賞。エルメス財団（パリ）、836m Gallery（サンフランシスコ）、写真研究所（リール）など、国際的な機関での展示やパフォーマンスを多く開催。モロッコ国立写真美術館の開館記念展覧会「Sourtna」（2020年）をキュレーションし、ワシントンの世界銀行（2022年）に巡回。

Agnès b. gallery boutique will hold Yoriyas’s (Yassine Alaoui Ismaili) solo exhibition “Casablanca Chess Cafe” from April 20th (Sat) to May 12th (Sun).
Yoriyas, who has a background as a professional breakdancer and began his career as a photographer in 2015, has received international acclaim for his unique perspective, and was recently identified by The New York Times as an artist to follow. His background as a dancer and choreographer, combined with a deep interest in mathematics and chess, contributes to his creation of complex yet balanced compositions.
This exhibition features 33 photos from his ongoing project “Traces of Chess Pieces,” which has spanned over seven years. Although Yoriyas had been passionate about chess from the age of five through his teens, he had distanced himself from the world of chess for a long time. He rediscovered his enthusiasm for the game after encountering people playing chess in a café at the heart of Casablanca. People of various ages, genders, and social statuses gather, and even after the lights go out at closing time, they continue to play by the light of their cell phones. Yoriyas captures the everyday life of this cafe and the bonds formed through chess, portraying the interplay of black and white, darkness and light, and the relationship between contrast and harmony.
Artist Profile
Yassine Alaoui Ismaili(Yoriyas) – Moroccan photographer and choreographer – first made his name as a professional breakdancer before pursuing a career in photography in 2015. He enjoys international recognition and was recently identified by The New York Times as an artist to follow. His work, which ranges from performance to photography, focuses on how we inhabit and appropriate urban and public spaces. He documents daily life and societal changes in Morocco – particularly in Casablanca, his home town – and in Africa. His candid shots are characterised by an intuitive quality and deliberate use of color. Yoriyas draws on his experience with choreography to garner fresh points of view. His instantaneous scenes are also reminiscent of his mastery of space and movement. His interest in mathematics and chess is reflected in his balanced yet complex compositions, which make use of distinct planes. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the International Prize for Contemporary Photography – CAP Prize 2018, the Friends of the IMA Prize for contemporary Arab creation, and the Taklif Prize at the Contemporary Dance Festival On Marche Marrakech 2023. He has exhibited and performed in international institutions such as the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès (Paris), 836m Gallery San Francisco and the Institut pour La photographie, Lille. He curated Sourtna, the inaugural exhibition of the National Photography Museum of Morocco and at the Washington World Bank in 2022.
